ITA Software, Inc.

ITA logo

ITA Software provides information technology and services to the airline industry. Combining advances in computer science, innovative problem-solving, and deep industry knowledge, the company's solutions deliver improved power and flexibility to the travel industry and greater efficiency for airlines, travel distributors, and passengers.

ITA Software is one of the largest commercial users of Lisp in the world today. Started by group of MIT computer scientists, ITA solved one of the industry's toughest challenges - consistently and accurately finding the lowest available airfares. This problem not only required complex algorithms to find the lowest available fares but also needed to operate in a high-volume, real-time transaction environment.

ITA's solution ia an innovative program called QPX, primarily written in Common Lisp. It searches -- at a billion combinations per query -- airline fares, schedules, and seat availability. Its highly configurable XML interface lets customers make changes quickly and efficiently, respond rapidly to shifting market conditions, drive sales, and dramatically reduce distribution costs.

Our customers include airlines: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Alitalia, American Airlines, Continental, U.S. Airways, etc., and travel distribution companies such as Accovia, CheapTickets, Cleartrip, Farecast, FareCompare, Farelogix, Hotwire, Kayak, Orbitz, etc.

We are now building a new airline reservation system. It's a high-performance transaction processing system with 99.99% uptime 24/7. It provides Intuitive interfaces, simplified processes, innovations in merchandising, a unified customer database, unparalleled self-service, improved inventory control and an advanced departure control system. It leverages new and lower-cost distribution channels to offer greater flexibility and the same level of innovative products and services across all touch points, creating a superior and consistent travel experience. Our first customer is Air Canada, with whom we are working closely.

The core of the reservation system is written in Common Lisp. At 500,000 lines of our code plus 150,000 lines of open-source libraries, with over sixty developers, it is one of the largest Common Lisp programs ever.

ITA Software is based in Cambridge, MA.
